A community-led approach

Supporting a more resilient and sustainable food system

Since 2017, Kahnawà:ke Collective Impact has worked alongside community members, grassroots initiatives, and local organizations to strengthen collective wellbeing and community led solutions. Building on years of work in food sovereignty, environmental stewardship, and community wellness, the Kahnawà:ke Food Plan represents an important next step toward a more sustainable food future.

Supported by the Greater Montreal Climate Fund, the project encourages community members to grow food at home through the distribution of gardening supplies and educational opportunities. Throughout the growing season, residents can participate in workshops focused on gardening, harvesting, seed saving, food preservation, and traditional teachings. The project also creates opportunities for youth and elders to learn from one another while strengthening connections to land, culture, and community.

The information gathered through these activities will help guide the development of a long term Kahnawà:ke Food Plan that reflects community priorities and supports greater food sovereignty, food security, nutritional health, and climate resilience.
