Cycliste averti

Cycliste averti is a school-based bicycle education program for students in grades 5 and 6. Its aim is to help students learn to use bicycles safely and more independently in their environment, so that they become an active generation who will naturally choose to use bicycles for their daily commutes.

Project monitoring indicators

GHG reduction and cross-functional benefits

According to program evaluations conducted by Vélo Québec, around 10% of the children who have participated in the program choose to adopt cycling as a means of transportation to their school at the end of the training. These students are tomorrow’s adults, and their awareness of sustainable and active mobility is another step towards decarbonizing the region.

The program’s cross-cutting benefits are numerous:

  • High potential for replication and scaling-up, structuring and mobilizing communities;
  • A program that takes into account issues of equity, inclusion and diversity;
  • Positive impact on health by reducing mortality rates from all causes (cancer, obesity, diabetes, etc.);
  • Safety benefits (the greater the number of cyclists on the road, the lower the number of collisions involving them);
  • Improved quality of life in urban environments (reduced air and noise pollution).

Quote from Vélo Québec’s program management

Reintroducing young people to independent cycling means giving them back the keys to their mobility and enabling them to take concrete action to contribute to decarbonization. It’s a great way to combat eco-anxiety and improve their general health!
