What about shared charging for businesses?
In Quebec, nearly 40% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector come from commercial freight transport. This reality calls for ambitious solutions to ensure cleaner and more sustainable commercial transportation.
The Greater Montreal Climate Fund announces the creation of a working committee aimed at establishing a shared network of fast-charging stations for commercial vehicles in Greater Montreal. Drawing on cross-sector collaboration, specialists will work together to lay the groundwork for a solution that will support the deployment of fleets of electric commercial vehicles, based on a rigorous feasibility study and solid business and financial models. All of this for the benefit of companies that have already begun to electrify their freight transportation and those that are ready to follow suit.
The proposed solution aims to remove the main barriers to the electrification of commercial vehicle fleets. It proposes access to shared, strategically located charging stations, eliminating the need for drivers to systematically return to their base for recharging. The aim is to increase productivity and generate savings for the companies involved by pooling the costs of installing and operating the infrastructure. But what are the factors for success in such an initiative? What obstacles need to be overcome? And how can this be achieved in the current economic climate? These are all questions to which the working committee will provide insightful answers.
Essential synergy
Drawing on its expertise in climate finance, the Greater Montreal Climate Fund has surrounded itself with key allies to lead this initiative. Among its partners are Propulsion Québec, an organization committed to the growth of Quebec’s zero-emission land transportation industry, and Dunsky Energy + Climate, a firm specializing in clean energy solutions. An advisory committee bringing together stakeholders from a variety of sectors—municipal, governmental, real estate, economic, and financial, to name a few—will guide the process by comparing proposals with the operational, industrial, and economic realities of the electric mobility and charging ecosystem. This synergy is essential to fostering the emergence of viable solutions!
This initiative is co-funded by the Trottier Family Foundation, a long-standing partner whose mission is to support initiatives in the areas of climate, science, education, health, and communities for the benefit of Canadians.
This is how, united, we are moving forward together to accelerate the electrification of freight transport and the decarbonization of Greater Montreal!
Sharing a charging network for and by businesses would encourage them to convert their fleets to electric vehicles more easily, thereby reducing the share of greenhouse gas emissions caused by urban delivery, which is constantly increasing due, in particular, to the growth of e-commerce and just-in-time delivery. This is the kind of strategic initiative that the Greater Montreal Climate Fund is pleased to support in order to catalyze the decarbonization of Greater Montreal.

Program Manager at the Greater Montreal Climate Fund
Our experience shows that charging constraints are a major obstacle to the large-scale electrification of commercial vehicle fleets. Sharing fast-charging infrastructure is a key lever for overcoming these barriers. Dunsky is proud to support the Greater Montreal Climate Fund in this effort by providing a rigorous analysis of current barriers, possible business models, and their financial implications.

Sharing charging infrastructure is a key economic driver for companies committed to decarbonizing their operations. By reducing investment and operating costs while improving fleet operational efficiency, it helps reconcile the energy transition with business competitiveness. This type of initiative is essential to supporting the electrification of freight transport across Quebec.
