Integrating the circular economy into the construction sector

Worldwide, the construction sector is responsible for 30% of resource extraction, greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and Quebec is no exception. Its construction sites generate some 3 million tonnes of residual materials every year, of which less than 1% is reused.
This is the backdrop to Matériaux Sans Frontières, a structuring circular economy project for the construction industry. Its aim is to develop a social economy enterprise specializing in the recovery and resale of construction materials. Innovative in Quebec, this business model relies in particular on Architecture Sans Frontière Québec’s ability to issue charitable receipts for donated materials, thus encouraging owners to absorb the additional costs of dismantling and recovering materials.
